Is Puppy Training Important?

Congratulations! You have a new addition to your family! A new puppy is an excellent new family member that will give you love and companionship for many years. Having a puppy gives you the great opportunity to prove you’re responsible and capable of caring for an animal. Puppies can be very demanding and require a lot of time and money during the first two years of their life. Just like a child, these animals will need constant attention and need to be taught what types of behavior are acceptable. If your dog does not receive the proper training, it can grow to continue bad behavior and cause considerable problems in the future.

Puppy Training at Canine Oasis

Puppy and dog training is important for you and your pet because they will be able to learn important skills. With the help of a professional trainer, you will be able to ensure that your furry friend will learn essential skills that will make them excellent companions and guests at other people’s homes and dog kennels.

Expectations

It is important to not have too many expectations when initially going to a puppy training class. Just like you didn’t learn everything you needed to know in one day, neither will your pet. Learning and training take time, especially because so much of training is dependent on reward patterns and repetition. Dog and puppy training both rely on positive reinforcement methods to train your pet. Your puppy must learn through completing a task and receiving a treat afterward in order to promote that action in the future. This method is very effective, but takes a while to complete. However, once your puppy has the hang of it, these lessons will stay with them throughout their entire lives.

What to Learn

Puppies need proper training early in life because they are far more likely to retain information and adhere to those lessons for their entire life. Many owners will take their puppy to training classes for many reasons, however, the most important one is how to sit, stay, and walk on a leash. Your puppy will have a short attention span, so it is important to give them time to pick up certain patterns of behavior. Typically, training can be started anywhere from seven to eight weeks of age. Though they are still too young to learn complex commands, puppies can learn “sit”, “down”, “stand”, and “stay.”

Training at Home

Training should occur in a quiet and distraction-free environment. The reward for the puppy should always be something they really like in order to properly motivate them. It is important to remember that training doesn’t stop at the puppy training facility. It is essential that you continue the training methods at home with your pet.
Training is important for young puppies, but don’t feel like you have to train them at a particular time or setting. Training can happen anywhere and help your puppy in the future. A goal you should typically strive for is to train your puppy at least 15 minutes each day — separating this time in five-minute intervals throughout the whole day.
